Ngorogoro Crater Day 2

After breakfast, we walked out the front of the main lodge, to find an elephant literally at the bottom of the stairs - maybe 15 steps away.  They keep decorative urns of spears at the base of the staircase - and this elephant had taken one out with his trunk and was playing with it.  He tossed it around and eventually snapped it in half - he seemed quite forlorn that he broke it.  He continued walking up the path of the hotel and over the small bridge that leads to the kitchen area.....
After that adventure, we left for our game drive in the crater.  The crater is a massive indescribable expanse - we winded out way down to the bottom on red dusty roads.  A truly spectacular first day.  We saw elephants, hyenas, a variety of bird species, wildebeasts, zebra, several types of antelope.  We spied 3 lions lazing in the sun - and later, one literally sought shade underneath another safari land rover.  The people inside were literally stuck there until he decided he was ready to move.
We saw a lakeful of flamingo, 2 cheetah on the move, ostrich, a pond of hippos all keeping cool in the muddy water - and rolling 360 degrees over to keep themselves cool.
I took hundreds of photos - which, I'm going to have to add to this blog later as they're not accessible.
After a very long and exciting day, we returned for dinner - and the staff entertained us with traditional tribal songs.
VERY early wake up call tomorrow....
